Another look at some delightful vehicles from the past, this time the coach fleet of Hall Brothers in South Shields. The E. and J. H. Hall (Hall Bros) business originated in Morpeth, Northumberland in 1929, and relocated to South Shields in either April 1933 or January 1937, reforming as Hall Bros (South Shields) Ltd on 23rd August 1946. The express services of Hall Bros were mainly focused around what was called the Tyneside - Midlands Express, which operated from South Shields to Coventry. In later years the original service from South Shields, via Newcastle upon Tyne, Chester le Street and Durham was supplemented with another route from South Shields via Sunderland, West Hartlepool, Billingham and Stockton on Tees. The two services merged at Darlington and shared a common route from there to Coventry with pick up points at Doncaster, Nottingham and Leicester.

For the hundreds of Geordies who found work and settled in Coventry and Warwickshire in the uncertain days of the 1930s, the long-distance coach service run by Hall Brothers of South Shields was a lifeline to friends and relatives back home. A combination of more paid holidays and luxury travel at an affordable price, created a boom in express coach travel. Motor coaches were often stylish, with Art Deco interiors and a roof luggage rack. Until the 1930 road traffic act, the coach scene was a tangled mess with more than a thousand authorities issuing hackney licences in their areas. When the Hall brothers started their service to Coventry their coaches were restricted to 30 m. p. h., which was 10 m. p. h. higher than the previous limit, but was more strictly enforced. But the most dramatic change came with a subsequent act which meant that operators had to run to an agreed timetable with fixed fares, and also prove that a demand existed for the service. Demand was certainly there for the Tyneside link.

In its heyday, as many as twelve stylish coaches painted in the firm's distinctive cream, red and black livery could be seen leaving Pool Meadow, Coventry bound for the north-east. Post-war years saw the start of two extra special services with names to match their purpose. The Starlight Express ran from Pool Meadow, starting out at 10pm on Friday and Sunday nights, and December 25th and 26th, enabling local factory workers to return to Tyneside for two whole days. There was another service for the hundreds of miners who lived in Coventry and north Warwickshire, which started in Keresley, was called the Black Diamond, and its timetable was arranged to suit the miners at Coventry colliery who needed to return home for a day or two. A further service operated between Keresley Colliey in Warwickshire and Easington Lane in County Durham, albeit only operating on bank holidays. Excursion and tour licences were also held from South Shields and Hebburn as well as match day excursions to Sunderland football ground from South Shields.

The Hall Bros business, including the associated fleet of Taylor Bros, North Shields, was acquired by Barton Transport in Nottingham at midnight on 13/14th July 1967 but was operated as a separate entity (a wholly-owned subsidiary) until January 1971, when the last vehicles transferred to the main Barton fleet. Barton Transport continued to operate the existing services using route numbers X81 and X82. The timetable remained very much the same for many years with a journey time of 10 hours and 30 minutes in 1932 and 10 hours 25 minutes in 1951. By 1982, this had been reduced to 8 hours 55 minutes. Overnight services were added later, operating on Friday and Sunday nights. Barton allocated H prefixed fleet numbers after July 1967 and these were usually applied when vehicles were repainted into Barton livery.

This page was compiled by Shane Conway, with assistance from Matthew Smith of the Barton Archive. The coaches below are listed by registration number in order of date of purchase, as fleet numbers were never used by the company. Additional data would be welcome.
