Another look at some delightful vehicles from the past. Here we pay a visit to that iconic Nottinghamshire operator Barton, and their varied fleet of post-war Leyland Tigers.

Barton Leyland Tiger No.557 (KAL 383) at Broadmarsh, Nottingham in 1964. Photo by TROTSKEE via the Barton Archive.

Barton Transport traced its Nottingham area origins back to 1900 and gained a reputation for operating an eclectic and varied fleet, both before the war and afterwards when they used vehicles from AEC, Bedford, Commer, Daimler, Dennis, Ford, Guy, Morris, Leyland and their own creation, the Barton BTS/1, initially reconstructed from 1930s Leyland Lions, but later from the chassis of Leyland Tigers and Titans. This page looks at their collection of post-war Leyland PS1 and PS2 Tigers.

The original vehicles (i.e. before any body-swaps or conversions) are shown in fleet number order. They all eventually went in one of four directions - sold, scrapped, converted to a Barton double decker, or converted to one of Barton's own design of single-decker, the BTS/1. At the end of this page there are lists of (1) Barton Leyland Tigers converted to double deckers, (2) second-hand Leyland Tigers acquired by Barton specifically for conversion to double deckers, (3) Leyland Tigers converted to Barton BTS/1 buses. As far as I know there are six surviving examples, all double deckers, of which three were exports to the USA (where they were popular due to their lowbridge bodies) and one of those is now, surprisingly, under apparent restoration in Mexico.

My sincere thanks to Matthew Smith and Phil Stevens from the Barton Transport Facebook Group and the Barton Archive, for the provision of more data and the kind supply and permission to use the fine photographs on this page. I would never have been able to do it without them!

NOTE: Leyland PS1/1 (JRR 373), c/n 481200, b/n 48551 Duple C35F, was delivered 7/48 to Woodhouse and Barton, Sandiacre. It appears to have been diverted from the Barton, Nottingham order for 20 vehicles (shown above), being identical in all respects to 550 to 568, and presumably would have been 569, that number being left vacant. W. and B. had family connections to the Nottingham company. JRR 373 subsequently passed to Blankley, Colsterworth in the early 1950s.
