Below are fleetlists for all known charabanc and coach tour operators based in the Isle of Man from 1907 onwards. The first bus operator on the island was the Manx Electric Railway, in July 1907 with two Argus charabancs on a service from Bungalow station to the company's hotel and tea-rooms at Tholt-y-Will. The next operator to start was a Mr. Hardy from Douglas, in February 1911, who ceased trading in February 1919. A further 303 start-ups continued from that time up to the present day, some of which were an existing business passing to a different family member or being reformed as a limited company or as a partnership. The length of the life of each operator varied from as little as five months (Breadner, Douglas) to several decades in many cases. Due to the seasonal nature of the Manx tourist trade, many of the early charabanc operators converted their vehicles to lorries during the winter months. One interesting career break was that undertaken by G. W. Wharton of Douglas (June 1934 to January 1961), with a ten year gap from October 1935 to July 1945. The early to mid 1960s saw the entire Manx coach industry being reformed and subjected to new licensing arrangements, the start of a chain of events which dramatically reduced the number of operators on the island's roads. By 1972 Tours (Isle of Man) Ltd. had become the largest operator, although their eventual monopoly was still to come. Much of the Tours fleet in the early years was to become synonymous with green and cream painted examples of Bedford production with various types of coachwork fitted, although some Leylands and Bristols were acquired from Isle of Man Road Services. This page covers all operators except Tours, who are covered on a separate page. The data on this page has taken a lot of research and therefore may be subject to some unintentional errors.
